Some pieces of equipment are somewhat of a source of contention among some wakeboarders. For instance, there is a debate among whether closed toe or open toe bindings are a superior design. Riders who are on the closed toe side of the debate cite the fact that these bindings fit more naturally. They say that they offer more control over the board, and they keep one’s toes warm in colder conditions.

On the other hand, open toe binding aficionados are of the opinion that one could ram one’s foot into the front of a closed toe model. They feel that open toe bindings don’t suffer from this limitation. While some of the discussion comes down to personal preference, both sides of the debate do raise decent points.

As for wakeboards themselves, riders can bicker for hours. Of course, there’s a good reason for this. There are so many different models on the market, and one might become quite dizzied looking through all of them. One of the important things to keep in mind, though, is the rocker of the board. The rocker is the curve of the wakeboard from end to end. Those boards that have a higher rocker will help a rider land better jumps. Flatter rockers allow for better control and acceleration. However, the rocker is usually only ever between 5-6 centimeters.

The tips of the board will also come into play for a lot of riders. A single tip board usually helps someone migrate from water skiing or surfing to wakeboarding, while a twin tip design usually helps those who are coming into the sport from skateboarding or snowboarding.
